He sat back on the couch and stared at the phone. Karen didn"t have any

recourse the way Jase saw it, but he wondered if she had it in her to do something

crazy. He didn"t think so, and besides, what was there to even react to? She didn"t

know what was really going on with Lowell.

And what was going on with Lowell? Jase wasn"t sure he knew, either. They"d

been having really good sex. No, “really good” was too mild a description for it, but

Jase didn"t have the vocabulary to describe what Lowell did to him, how Lowell

made him feel. Just that afternoon, they"d had sex until it felt like his brain had

melted.

But was it more than that? He certainly liked Lowell—liked him a hell of a

lot—but he knew also that sex on the sly was probably as far as it would ever go, as

far as it could ever go. There was no way Jase could parade around town with

Lowell on his arm like a boyfriend. And it wasn"t like Jase could just invite Lowell

over any time. He had promised that he wouldn"t expose Layla to the people he

dated, and he still intended to keep that promise.

Because he and Lowell weren"t really dating. Sure, they went out to eat

occasionally and hung out together when they both had time free, Jase told himself,

but that wasn"t the same as dating.

No, they were just friends. Friends who sometimes had ridiculous, amazing,

brain-dribbling-out-of-your-ears sex.

Layla wandered into the living room and sat on the couch. “Are the Yankees

playing?” she asked.

Jase looked at the TV. There was indeed a Yankees game on. He"d long since

stopped paying attention. He turned up the volume. “Yeah. Baltimore.”

“Oh good.”

She crawled over and leaned against Jase, so he put an arm around her and let

her snuggle against him. He sighed and tried to put things in perspective. This is

what"s important, he thought. But if this was all there was, why did he feel so sad

about it?
